Maui, 2 years ago, a lady I worked with had a hip replaced. She was 64 years old at the time. She came back to work at 5 or 6 weeks. I had to visit her several times to get things signed and I'll say that she was walking well with her walker at 3 or 4 days. The key is to get up and get moving. She also had steps to her bedroom and managed the steps on her first day at home! Her biggest complaint is that she didn't feel as if she built up her stamina as quick as she thought she should. BUT, her husband took her to the mall (she had surgery in wintery February) nearly every day and each day she pushed to walk further with her walker until she was more confident.

My BIL just had his hip replaced about 8 weeks ago. I have to tell you that he's probably close to 200 pounds overweight a a real weiner when it comes to pain--more than most men. In the last 2 1/2 years he also had both knees replaced and complains of chronic back pain. He was out to breakfast 2 days after coming home from the hospital. Just this past weekend he was out doing some yard work (he hasn't done ANY for the past 2 summers). I have to say that he has made much better recovery than I had expected.

I'm sure your Mom will do fine. Probably the worst part will be for you the first few days by spending time waiting on her and waiting on her to wake up after a pain med. I'll keep you both as well as her doctor in my prayers. Come in when you can to let us know how she's doing.
