I read the transcript and listened to the audio. I also listened to the Spanish interpreter who was simultaneously translating. Nothing quoted here was out of context. Other questions asked of him were unrelated. I think that he may have not have understood the interviewer's accent, even though she was very easy to understand. The word "Spain" was very clear, if not her pronunciation of Zapatero's full name. She also clarified her question twice. I think McCain just assumed for some reason that she was talking about some Latin American leader. His answers indicated that.

What is bizarre to me is that McCain's camp claims he knew what he was saying. If that's the case, his answers were completely inappropriate, and he owes Zapatero and the Spanish people an apology.
